The principal part of my creative process is trusting my intuition. I pay attention to my inner knowing and feelings. I allow them to guide my experiences as I write, paint, draw, et cetera.
So, what is intuition? According to Dictionary.com, intuition is a direct awareness of truth or fact that is independent of any method of reasoning. Intuition is an instant understanding or concern. It is often a keen and quick insight; or, it is the quality or ability of having such direct perception or quick insight. Philosophically speaking, intuition is an immediate cognition of an object not predetermined or inferred by a previous cognition of the same object. It is pure, untaught, non-inferential information, intelligence, awareness, or expertise.
To me intuition is my inner wisdom, sometimes in form of a hunch, a concept, or just an instinctive feeling. As creatures of reason, we often ignore our intuition because it may not follow logic; however, we find that our gut feeling/intuition was correct from the beginning. I know you have experienced this at least once in your lifetime.
My intuition has guided me to make the decisions necessary to follow my creative calling, as well as direct my writing, designs, art-making, lesson plans, and various activities to run my creative business. These decisions are grounded in love, audacity, and boldness. I have found, when I follow the path directed by my intuition, everything falls into place.
For example, when I start a painting, I allow my spirit (heart) and not my head (brain) choose the colors and brushes. I don’t usually plan my artwork, I just start laying down color. And, within an hour, give or take a few minutes, the painting takes form and everything falls into place as I lose myself in the creative process.
This process is similar in my writing. I already have a sense of what and how I want to share my words… especially in creative writing pieces (short stories and poetry). With more complex pieces in art and writing, I may use a “concept map” or “sketch out a design”; but, these are also led by my intuition, not by my reasoning brain.
On the other hand, I do allow my reasoning brain to try out new art/painting techniques and research topics I would like to explore in my writing; but, once more, I am led by spirit or intuition. I allow my feelings to guide me to these new experiences; and, by allowing my heart to lead me, I am content, blissful, and inspired to do more.
If you are uncertain of a choice, look to recognize and understand whether it came from the heart or was it rooted in fear. I encourage you to go with a decision rooted in love. Trust your intuition.
