Remembering the Blessings of the Season

As the hustle and bustle of the season picks up, especially in the United States during the week of and following Thanksgiving, stress and negativity can sneak into our lives. More people will be out and about shopping for ingredients and gifts, mailing out cards and packages, delivering items for donation, attending events, etc. Let us remember to hold onto the blessings of the season. Let us remain in a state of love and gratitude.

Yes, there will be more traffic; but, there will also be some magnificent displays of lights and Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations to see while sitting in that traffic. Also, we can tune into some wonderful holiday music on our car radios, right? Let us focus on the bright side of it all. Let us take in everything… the sights, sounds, and smells of the season.

Here are a list of ideas on how to stay positive and keep negative thinking at bay.

  • Find creative ways to be extra kind, caring and loving. Kindness breeds kindness and ignites joy in everyone who observes it.
  • Sing along to your favorite songs.
  • Talk with a good friends, especially one you have not connected with in a while.
  • I have found starting sentences with I appreciate… instead I am sorry to be effective in elevating situations. For example, if you are late to a meeting instead of saying I am sorry for being late, say, “I appreciate your patience with my tardiness.”
  • Have a go to word or phrase to uplift you and your situation. Some of my friends use the word “Om”. Others say, “Praise be the Lord” or simply, “Praise be.”
  • Hold onto a gratitude attitude and count your blessings.
  • Find inspiration from the Bible. Examples: James 1:2 – “Count it ALL joy;” Psalm 23 – “The Lord is my shepherd.”
  • Keep a journal handy to write down or doodle those things irritating you and make it into something funny or clever. It could become fodder for a funny story or cartoon.
  • Go for a walk out (in nature if possible). In fact, any physical activity will give you a lift.
  • Color, paint, draw, make a craft, bake some bread and cookies, bang on a drum, strum a guitar, read a good book, play a game, do some origami, carve some wood, etc. In other words, take time to engage in your favorite hobby or pastime.
  • Limit your time with negative people. If possible, cut all ties with them like on social media.
  • Blow BUBBLES! I have been known to keep bubbles in my car and when I am in the midst of stop and go traffic, I will pull them out and play with them.
  • Silliness, random dancing, playing with children and pets, etc. will chase away negativity.
  • Aromatherapy. Get out your favorite scents. Burn sage to bless and cleanse your environment.
  • Laughing. Listen to or watch a comedy routine (movie, television show, or stand-up).
  • Laughter Yoga. This is a relatively new form of yoga and it is fantastic.
  • Breathe deeply and mindfully.
  • Count to ten; a hundred or more when the situation is really bad.
  • Visualize white light around yourself and imagine it growing.
  • Relax with your favorite wine, beer, or cocktail when you get home. Have a favorite treat. ‘Tis the season to indulge in a bit of “eggnog” and holiday cookies.
  • Enjoy a nice warm, bubble bath or long shower.

Take the time to remember the best of the holiday season. What did you most enjoy during this time frame in years past? Reflect back to a happy time and hold onto that memory. Let it be a spark of joy to ignite your spirit this year and warm your heart even more than ever before.
