Our thoughts influence our future.

Our future is continually being shaped by our ideas, our words and our actions of the present moment. We can look back to when we were younger and see for ourselves that this statement is justifiably true. Isn’t our current health state fashioned, for the most part, by what we ate and how we exercised? As we become more adept to observing our thoughts, words, and actions, we can learn to use some care and introspection to restrain ourselves from being negative.

Kong Fu-zi (Kong the master, Latinized as Confucius) philosophized around 500 BC that “Every thought you think is generating your future. Every act you do is cultivating your future. Every word you speak is creating your future. Become aware of your thoughts, words and actions… Do your habits assist you in creating what you desire, or do they hold you back? Many humans have self-defeating habits and are not even aware of them; one of them being our thoughts. Become aware of your thoughts: are they of beauty, goodness, joy, truth and light? You have millions of thoughts a day – how many of them are uplifting and positive for yourself and others? How many of them are negative or put-downs? You must become aware of the thoughts you are tossing out into the universe.”

How many thoughts do you believe you have in a day? Moreover, how many of them are positive and uplifting; and, how many of them are negative? We can make a significant impact in our lives and the lives of others simply by resisting and eventually eliminating pessimistic thinking. Of course, awareness is a key factor in this practice. We need to catch ourselves contemplating to realize any stinking thinking. At that moment we sense ourselves becoming cynical or unkind, we can stop that negative thought before it becomes vocalized or enacted. By eliminating negative thinking, we create a setting conducive to initiate a habit of positive thinking. Positive thinking incites beneficial conversations and promotes deeds of kindness.

The best way to start our day is with positive thoughts and a smile, right? We can consider thinking about 5 or more things for which we are grateful; or, we could think about people or events that has brought us joy. Let us make this a “positive thinking ritual,” where we visualize ourselves achieving a promotion, getting an award, receiving a gift, making someone happy, helping out a child, or any number of things that brings warmth to our hearts. When we make our “upbeat thinking ritual” a routine that we do daily (morning and/or night), we will start to see an influence in our lives that will bring more and more joy. We are energizing our minds with beneficial things, as we enliven our bodies with nutritious foods and vigorous activity. This will cultivate a positive future for our spirits as well as our physical forms.
