Be authentic.


How do we characterize being authentic? Authenticity is the state of being genuine, truthful, and/or sincere. Authenticity is established when we validate ourselves and follow through on commitments. As we are able to identify ourselves (and purpose), people become aware of our realness and legitimacy. As we are true to our character and spirit, we build relationships based on honesty, trust, and respect.

That is great if we are secure with ourselves and know who we are; but, suppose we are not clear on our purpose and/or who we truly are? One of the hardest things to do is to be authentic when we do not know who we are. A good place to start is to place ourselves in front of a mirror and state our name, “I am… [insert your name]” Then we follow this up with positive affirmations that we know are such as: “I am smart; I am open to new ideas; I am a good listener; I am a good friend; I am a great parent; I am wonderful spouse; I am…” Allow the list to go on and on.

Afterward write these positive affirmations down on sticky notes you can set all over the place as a reminder of precisely how great you are. Also, consider all your achievements and milestones, as well as, all the activities and events that bring you joy. You may also want to reflect on those issues and concerns of which you deem significant. Write or draw these down in a notebook, journal, or art journal, along with all the positive affirmations. Reread and assess them, as these affirmations, achievements, joyful events and significant issues begin to define who you are authentically.

And you know what? You are what you think you are. You become your words and your thoughts. Also, you get to choose those words and thoughts every single day and every single moment of your life. There are many methods to help people clarify who they are and their purpose. A phenomenal way to gain clarity is through life coaching and/or mental health counseling. Now, consider the following, are you being true to yourself and others? What are you thinking right now? Are they positive thoughts?  Remember, thoughts become reality.
